Review :Thaleia
Category: Excolo - The Muses

Description: How light the strain when, decked in vernal bloom,
Thalia tuned her lyre of melody.

Thaleia the Flourishing is the Muse of Comedy and Pastoral Poetry, and shares the same name as one of the Gratiæ. She is a very down-to-Earth Goddess, and has a special fondness for rural folk. She wears a crown of ivy leaves and carries the Mask of Comedy and a shepherd’s crook. The Blooming One is the Goddess of Comedians and inspires creativity in wit and the joy and release we have in laughter. A vivacious, dazzling, merry scent: honey, ylang ylang, apricot, ciste, blood orange and gardenia with earthy, warm tonka.

In the vial: Honey, honey, ylang-ylang's sweetness, and more honey with a sprinkle of vanilla and tonka. Only a vague hint of fruit in some sweetness, nothing identifiable.

On Wet: ...Ditto. Stays pretty constant for me. I don't get a single bit of fruit! Not all. It stays very warm and sweet, mostly honey and vanilla for me.

Drydown: The gardenia makes an appearance, a hint of floral among these heady scents. I never get any fruit at all. It stays slightly earthy, warm and sweet on me all the way through.

Not a bad scent, but I have plenty of vanilla or honey scents I like better. This is up for trade.

Review: Morgause
Category: Bewitching Brews

Description: Earth sorceress and mother of Mordred, she is, in essence, the harbinger of King Arthur's doom and the downfall of Camelot. She is a sister, or sister-self, to Morgan Le Fay. A bouquet of five night-blooming flowers deepened by dusky violet, purple fruits and the barest breath of medieval incenses.

In the Vial: Floral, purple. Lots of violets, hints of other things.

On Wet: Violets laced with incense. Very potent, with a sort of smokey undertone -- not like the smell of smoke, but I suppose tha's the incense wafting around the violets and other florals. It's a very womanly scent -- not old lady floral.

Drydown: I never once get a whiff of the purple fruits that are supposedly in this scent. It's all florals and incense, which is okay. It looses some of it's heady strength and tames itself a bit, turning into a gentler purple floral on me.

Not bad, but not as fantastic as I had hoped. I'll probably use the imp, but I don't know if I'll buy a bottle. It's a very rich scent, probably best for Winter -- if I do buy a bottle, it won't be for months.

Reviews: Masquerade
Category: Bewitching Brews

Description: A festive, dazzling blend, layered in mystery and intrigue. Patchouli, ambergris, carnation and orange blossom.

In The Vial: Incensey, with an undertone of orange. Very sharp, very aggressive.

On Wet: ... I feel like I've been trying on a lot of body sprays at the perfume counter and NONE of thme have blended well. It's one of the first blends I've worn that smells patently 'perfumey'. It just smells -- fake. The incense is fading fast from the initial burst, too.

Drydown: It never really loses that artifical smell. The incense fades and the orange blossom and the carnation don't blend well in my nose. I really wanted to like this too, because I love patchouli and orange blossom! :(

Up for trade! Totally.

Review: Shub-Niggurath
Category: Picnic In Arkham

Description: Iä! Shub-Niggurath! The Black Goat of the Woods with a Thousand Young, the All-Mother and wife of the Not-to-Be-Named-One.

The lust incense of a corrupted Astarte. A blend of ritual herbs and dark resins, shot through with three gingers and aphrodisiacal spices.

In The Bottle: OMG, Bakery at Christmas! Gingerbread! Spice cookies! Mmmmmyeah.

On Wet: Oh my god what is that wet, flat, rotty smell?! :( There's spice-- and then there's this funny green, mossy river-rock smell. They do not smell good together. I am assuming this is the ritual herb moment.

Thankfully... I don't have time to stop and wash it off. I have to go to work, which gives it time to get into the drydown.

Drydown: The green-rock smell fades completely. It's very brief, but then it's all ginger again, with a cinnamon dribble and a very faint herby balance. I'm glad I didn't have the time to wash this off, otherwise I would have missed that it drys down into something perfectly good and nummy! We'll definitely have to put this to the boyfriend test tonight, though-- see how well he likes me spiced. ;)

Don't know about a bottle until Christmas when Ginger will be in the air, but...

Review: Red Lantern (Year unknown)
Category: Limited Edition, Lupercalia

Description: A tribute to the opium den cum bawdyhouses of Shanghai in the 1930’s. Golden amber, blonde tobacco, Sudanese black coconut, rich caramel, black currant, white opium and delphinium laced with a sensual blend of Asian spice.

In The Vial: Sweet, sugary -- I get a lot of caramel; I think that's the blended notes of tabacco and amber with it.

In Wet: I have just slathered caramel on my wrist... I have this urge to lick myself, and must resist. I love the smell of caramel, and the taste that much more.

Drydown: This -- evens out into ... into something with spice behind it. Amber, and tabacco lay behind the caramel; opium and spices keep it -- well, not lively, but from being just another food scent. I'm not sure if I like this or not. It'll probably take a couple more wears for me to figure out.

I do know -- this smells golden-brown, thought.

Review: Spider
Category: Neil Gaiman; Anansi Boys

Description: White ginger, artemesia, vetiver, nutmeg, King mandarin, bergamot, and lime.

In The Vial: Spicy-citrus. Very strange, that.

On Wet: I've been attacked by a lime. Srsly. A big, juicy lime just rolled right over me. It's a runaway lime! Ahh, I've been limed! This is why I don't wear a lot of 'green' scents or citrus. IT ATTACKS!

Drydown: This calms down a lot, fast, as it dries. The florals begin to take the citrus down a notch and this becomes a lot more bearable. It might be the only citrus-y scent that didn't have it's root in orange blossom that I like. I think this might be a bottle purchase, but I can't quite nail down a distinct yes or no on that. I think it will require the boyfriend test tonight. ;)

A note: This is a rather -- man's cologne type of smell. That's one thing I must warn about. While the ginger warms it and the other green notes temper the citrus it's the most 'cologne'-esque smell I've had out of BPAL. Even Iago, which is 'masculine' tagged, isn't quite so -- male.

And now the Seek: A decant of Mr. Nancy to try -- I really, really want to try that one a lot, even more so then Spider! Does anybody have some to share?

Even if this is marked trade, it was gifted: The package arrived today, daniidebrabant! Thank you so much!

I have a 5ml of Tokyo Stomp.  I will probably be able to decant sometime, but it will be a long time before I'm able to do so.

Still, please, let me know if you're interested.

(Perhaps if daniidebrabant is feeling up to it, if I sent her the bottle and money for supplies, she would be kind enough to do it for me? >_> I know I still have to send you that package.  It will go out tomorrow.)

Is it just me?
Or does Carnal smell like baby?

Not baby powder but baby.

Am I nuts here? I'm completely associating it with that smell. Which isn't really very, you know carnal. More pure and innocent and freshly-washed.

Review: Jezebel
I'm really behind on my reviews. :( But here's one!

Category: Love Potions

Description: Biblical witch, priestess of Astarte, and general troublemaker. A true role model for today's upwardly mobile Modern Woman. A gloriously decadent blend of honey, roses, orange blossom and sandalwood.

In the vial: Spicy Oranges. Mmm, smells tasty.

On Wet: Sweet, candied-something oranges and spice. Very warm, very heady. Not over-thick or sticky, though. It's orange flowers and sandalwood, mostly. I don't detect much rose and I think the honey is holding the two primary notes together, giving it the slightly candied aroma.

Drydown: The roses? Never, ever appear. The orange blossoms fade a little, but it's not gone completely. Sandalwood takes over and gives me a spicy, incensey smell, but a good sexy one, and the honey stays and tempers it from getting too single-note.

Definitely a 'I feel sexy confident' perfume.

Definitely a bottle purchase in my future.

I nearly cried in the post office today...
So, like, back near the beginning of May, I ordered three limited edition scents from BPAL. They were mailed out on May 31. USPS's tracking tool told me they'd arrived at my place on June 2. No package. But sometimes, it's erratic and the actual package shows up later so I don't think much of it and went along.

No package on Monday. On Tuesday, I mention it in the BPAL forums and it's suggested I take it up with my local PO, which I'd planned on doing. No package on Tuesday. On Wednesday morning, I call up USPS and it's confirmed that the package, indeed, is supposed to have been delivered, but I am given the option of asking them to investigate it and getting a callback "within a day". I give them my info (address, two contact phone numbers, the tracking number for the package) and they say they'll send it on to the local PO and have them call me back "within a day" with whatever they find. Today rolls around. No calls have come for me from USPS by the time I leave work to either my cell or my work phone so I swing by the local PO and tell the lady there the story and that since nobody called me back I thought I'd just come and talk to them face to face. I am basically told if it says it was delivered on the second, then it must have been delivered on the second (with the suggestion that maybe my postperson had left the package on my doorstep and that maybe someone stole it. Which yeah, could happen, but these boxes fit inside my mailbox and I've never had the postperson leave it on my doorstep.) and there's nothing they can do. And yeah, I get that, I didn't get insurance on the package (I don't even remember if BPAL does insurance for their stuff though I'm sure they would if you ask). I'm fighting off tears, though, as I walk out of there. That's a pretty tidy sum of money I get nothing for, after all, and everyone I'd talked to had been pretty much unsypathetic.

Imagine my surprise, then, when I get home and check my mailbox. There's my package! And on the label, handwritten is This was delivered to the wrong address by a sub. Sorry, I corrected it. Reg, [postperson].

So thank you, guy who delivers my mail! I will now have to call the PO back and tell them how appreciative I am you noticed this mistake and corrected it.
